Among all the marine life that inspires my paintings, sea turtles hold a very special place in my heart. I have spent much of my life near the ocean, and over the years I have had the privilege of observing these beautiful creatures both above and beneath the surface.

I even live in a place whose name, in the Mayan language, translates to “Place of the Turtles”  Akumal, a beautiful coastal town in Quintana Roo, in the heart of the Riviera Maya. Surrounded by turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, coral reefs, lagoons, and abundant marine life, it is a place where the presence of turtles feels deeply woven into everyday life.

Out of the 7 species of turttles that exist, 4 species come to the Caribbean waters to feed, to migrar and to nest during the reproduction season.  including the Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle (Carey), Loggerhead Turtle (Caguama), and occasionally the Leatherback Turtle. Each one carries its own beauty, colors, patterns, and personality, becoming part of the living landscape.

There is something deeply calming about them. Their movement is gentle and graceful, yet filled with quiet strength. Old or young, each turtle carries a unique presence  ancient, peaceful, and timeless.

When I first came to Akumal, the first day I witnessed something extraordinary, a  sea turtles coming ashore during nesting season to lay their eggs. Every year, from April through September, these ancient creatures return to the beaches of the Caribbean to continue a cycle that has existed for thousands of years.

Then, around sixty days later, tiny hatchlings begin emerging from the sand and instinctively run toward the ocean. Watching these baby turtles make their first journey to the sea was also an amazing  moving experiences I had ever witnessed. It felt fragile, beautiful, and deeply connected to the rhythm of nature.

Over the years of diving, snorkeling, and swimming in these waters, I have encountered turtles of varios sizes and species. But the most impressive are the oldest mothers whatever specie it is. If you approach them very slowly and calmly, sometimes they allow you to come surprisingly close. In those quiet moments, you can look into their  wise eyes, you can see in them the countless journey they have lived beneath the sea.

As a hobby, I also spent time as an underwater model and had the opportunity to appear in many beautiful photographs with sea turtles. Swimming beside them or trying to pose with one underwater,  was a truly chalenging adventure. We would think that turtles move slowly, but underwater they are incredibly fast and agile, you need to be in a very good shape to be able to swim near them for a few seconds.

I remember once following a turtle so deep into the ocean that I completely lost track of both time and depth. The experience was unforgettable  a mixture of beauty and excitement.

Many of my paintings are inspired by these encounters. Through color, texture, and movement, I try to capture not only the form of the turtles, but also the calm spirit they bring to the ocean.

The sea continues to offer constant source of inspiration through the coral reefs, fish, waves, colors, light, and endless creatures with captivating shapes and forms.  But turtles remain one of the ocean’s most gentle and enduring teachers.

The turtle has been a powerful symbol in many cultures for thousands of years, especially in coastal and Indigenous traditions.

The shell represents protection, grounding, and inner strength. In many traditions, the turtle symbolizes carrying one’s home, peace, and security wherever life leads.

Connection to Earth & Water

Because turtles move between land and sea, they are often associated with balance, harmony, and the connection between worlds. “Earth, ocean, spirit, and life cycles”

Patience & Calm Movement

Their slow and graceful movement symbolizes tranquility, perseverance, and moving through life with intention rather than haste.

Longevity & Continuity

Turtles are symbols of long life, resilience, and continuity. In many cultures they represent timelessness and the enduring rhythms of nature.
